Brother Dennis G. Kemp, Sr., MGA, PMP

Brother Kemp was born in Washington, D.C., to Brother Irvin O. Kemp, a chemist at the Department of the Navy, and Evelyn B. Kemp, a dental assistant for the District of Columbia Department of Public Health. Brother Irvin Kemp was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Phi chapter and was a life member. Brother Kemp has one brother, Gary Kemp. Brother Kemp attended Holy Redeemer Elementary and John Carroll High School. In his youth, he played Little League baseball.  He is the father of three children: Henri Harps, Courtney Curtis and Dennis G. Kemp, Jr. (deceased).  He has four grandchildren: Kayla, Ellison, Cori and Caleb.

Brother Kemp received his bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in business administration from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 1982. While earning his degree at VCU, he participated in the Black Caucus and intramural sports, including football and basketball. He also earned his master’s degree (M.G.A.) in financial management from the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) and received his Project Management Professional certification (PMP) in 2009.

Brother Kemp has over twenty five years of experience in federal contracting with a concentration in Information Technology (IT) program and project management. He currently works for SAIC Inc. as a Project Manager concentrating on U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs IT projects.

Brother Kemp previously served as a university administrator at several institutions; he was the associate director of student financial aid at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the director of financial aid at Coppin State University. During his tenure at Coppin, he also served as chair of the Maryland-District of Columbia-Delaware Association of Student Aid Financial Administrators.  He has also served an Assistant Professor at the UMGC in the School of Business and Professional Programs.

In 1978, Brother Kemp was initiated into the Theta Rho Chapter (seated at VCU) and is a life member (#10396) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He is currently a member of the Kappa Phi Lambda (KPL) Chapter, he has served as Chapter Chaplin, Chapter Director of Education, Chapter Vice President and Chapter President. While Chapter President Kappa Phi Lambda chapter won Eastern Region Chapter of the Year. He has also been named Brother of the Year and Alpha Man of Merit by KPL. On the District level he served as Area Director.   On the regional level he served as Associate Director of Conventions and Executive Director.  Brother Kemp was elected as the twenty-fifth Eastern Regional Vice President and served two terms from 2005 to 2009.  During his tenure on the fraternity’s Board of Directors he served on the Budget and Finance committee.  He was also the presiding officer at the opening session of the Centennial Convention in 2006 and he spearheaded the eastern regional’s first staff meeting in Bermuda, which led the way for Bermuda to host an Eastern Regional Convention.  He was instrumental in the reinstatement of Alpha Chapter at Cornell University. He has served in a number of capacities for the fraternity including as a member of the Executive Director Search Committee and Director of General President Transition Team for 34th General President Brother Mark Tillman.

Brother Kemp is an active member of The People’s Community Baptist Church, he is former Chair of the Trustee Board and a Sunday school teacher. He also serves as Chair of the Alpha Foundation of Howard County, for which he is a charter member and former treasurer. He is also a Founding Board Member and Former Chair of the Alpha Phi Alpha Charitable Foundation. He serves on the advisory board of the Center for Infant and Child Loss. Additionally, he is a member of the Baltimore chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI).
